Increased extracellular volume in asymptomatic cocaine abusers detected by cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

چکیده
Background Cocaine abuse is associated with an increased risk for coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. However, there is a paucity of data on myocardial injury in asymptomatic cocaine abusers. T1 mapping cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has the ability to quantify diffuse alterations in myocardial tissue composition by assessing the extracellular volume fraction (ECV). This study aimed at detecting silent myocardial injury in cocaine abusers using CMR.

Long term effects of cocaine on the heart assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance at 3T
BACKGROUND Cocaine is an addictive, sympathomimetic drug with potentially lethal effects. The prevalence and features of cocaine cardiotoxicity are not well known. We aimed to assess these effects using a comprehensive cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) protocol in a large group of asymptomatic cocaine users. METHODS Consecutive (n = 94, 81 males, 36.6 ±7 years), non-selected, cocaine ab...
متن کاملThe Correlation between Left and Right Ventricular Ejection Fractions in Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease, Documented by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction: The correlation between right and left ventricular ejection fractions (RVEF and LVEF, respectively) has been studied in only a small number of patients with a marked decrease in RVEF and LVEF. The aim of the present study was to compare LVEF and RVEF in patients with ischemic heart disease. RVEF and LVEF were measured by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging. Materials a...
متن کاملBrain Structural Changes Caused by Autism Spectrum Disorder Based on Volumetric Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images: A Review Study
Background and purpose: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a psychiatric disorder which occurs in early years of life and causes various individual and social problems. Early detection of autism would help in taking necessary precautions and preventing its adverse side effects. Methods & Materials: In this paper, we reviewed the articles that have investigated brain structural changes caused by...
متن کاملWidespread disruption in brain activation patterns to a working memory task during cocaine abstinence.
Cocaine abstinence is associated with impaired performance in cognitive functions including attention, vigilance and executive function. Here we test the hypothesis that cognitive dysfunction during cocaine abstinence reflects in part impairment of cortical and subcortical regions modulated by dopamine. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study brain activation to a verbal w...
متن کاملThalamo-cortical dysfunction in cocaine abusers: implications in attention and perception.
Cocaine affects sensory perception and attention, but little is known about the neural substrates underlying these effects in the human brain. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a sustained visuospatial attention task to assess if the visual attention network is dysfunctional in cocaine abusers (n=14) compared to age-, gender-, and education-matched controls (n=14). Compar...
